Healthcare, Hospitality, HVAC and More: How Community Partners are Supporting PACS Students with Career Readiness
April 30, 2026
At Passport Academy Charter School, education extends far beyond the classroom walls. It’s about preparing students for life after high school - equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to navigate a dynamic, evolving workforce. That’s why the school, in collaboration with several of its partners, is committed to exposing students to diverse career pathways throughout the academic year, helping them discover their interests and develop a strong vision for their future.
These pathways span industries that touch nearly every aspect of daily life, from healthcare to construction, hospitality to carpentry. By introducing students to such a wide range of opportunities, Passport Academy ensures that every student, regardless of background or aspiration, can envision a future for themselves.
“As an example, this year, several of our students have learned about the energy industry through involvement in CNX Resource’s Mentorship Academy,” said Joe Oliphant, PACS principal. “We’ve also been fortunate to have representatives from UPMC come to the school and share the vast number of career options that exist in the healthcare industry.”
Another community partner, Catalyst Connection, exposes students to the world of manufacturing, from robotics and autonomous vehicles to 3D printing. Its Making Your Future Program addresses the local skilled worker shortage by working with students so they are aware of career opportunities, and support those interested in an equitable way. The MYF program provides pre-employment training, career counseling, and job placement.
Nationally, there are sixteen established pathways used to help guide students in their career exploration. They include agriculture; architecture and construction; arts and communications; business management; education and training; finance/ government and public administration/ health sciences; hospitality and tourism; human services; information technology (IT); law and public safety; manufacturing; marketing; STEM, and transportation and logistics.
While the pathways framework is well-established, what makes Passport Academy’s approach unique is how they are brought to life. Through interactive experiences, guest speakers, hands-on learning opportunities, and real-world connections, students don’t just learn about careers - they experience them.
“Thanks to our partners, we are able to show students, for instance, what a career as an ultrasound technologist might look like instead of talking about healthcare generally,” said Oliphant. “Instead of discussing arts and communications, they get hands-on experience in podcasting and scriptwriting through the Saturday Light Brigade. We are able to ground them in the reality of the work.”
This exposure helps students begin to identify their strengths and interests. A student who enjoys problem-solving might gravitate toward STEM or IT, whereas a natural communicator might find their passion in marketing or human resources. Over time, these experiences help build clarity and fuel motivation.
Another community partner, Rosedale Technical College, introduces students to different trade career possibilities including carpentry, welding and electrical work. For Passport Academy students interested in these areas, school administration fosters campus visits and helps them identify what educational areas most appeal to them.

“We are thrilled to see Passport Academy Charter School graduates continue their educational journey at Rosedale Technical College in our Carpentry program. We hope to help them turn their ambition into real-world skills and career opportunities," said Kara Chan, Director of Education & Marketing at Rosedale.
“Passport Academy was a great school to be a part of,” said PACS alumnus Deja Hoskey. “Everyone is rooting for you no matter what scope of life you come from. I’m studying carpentry at Rosedale Technical College now, and I would not be here without the support and guidance I received from Passport Academy.”
Just as importantly, students begin to understand that there is no single path to success. Whether they choose college, technical training, or direct entry into the workforce, they are better prepared to take that next step with purpose.
Passport Academy appreciates the support it receives from all of its community partners. To learn more about how local organizations assist with its mission to ensure students graduate high school and move into meaningful career paths, visit: https://back-pacs2024.prezly.com/.
