Passport Academy Embraces PBIS Program Fostering Positive, Safe Learning Environments

Transforming School Climate Through Consistency, Recognition, and Care

At Passport Academy Charter School, creating an environment where every student feels seen, supported and celebrated is central to our identity. That’s why the implementation of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) program has become such an important part of daily life at our school. Designed to encourage positive choices, strengthen relationships and reward good behavior, PBIS helps ensure all of our students have the opportunity to thrive.

Our PBIS program is guided by Ms. Heusey (special education), Mr. Cercone (science) and Dr. Milke (director of special education).  They collaborate to bring PBIS to life at PACS in a meaningful and relevant way. From establishing the framework for the program to field trips and on-campus incentives, these educators ensure that the program runs smoothly and gets students excited to be involved in PACS culture.

Some PACS students celebrated their PBIS incentive at the Pittsburgh Zoo this fall!

Because students come to our school with a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences, PACS needed a structured way to reinforce positive behavior and ensure fairness across the board. In addition, PBIS provides a common language for administrators and students to use when it comes to discussing expectations at school.

For students who are often quiet or sometimes overlooked, PBIS offers moments of recognition for their good choices,” said Ms. Heusey. “For those that need a bit more guidance, it shows how positive actions lead to real rewards. PBIS levels the playing field so individual students can succeed on their own terms.”

Since the implementation of PBIS,  PACS educators have noticed a shift in the school’s culture and overall vibe. Students are more motivated and enthusiastic, excited to earn a trip to the school store or receive a Friday incentive.

According to Joseph Oliphant, PACS principal, the biggest changes are seen in students who've been immersed in PBIS over time. “We see stronger positive behavior patterns, better engagement and more pride in personal progress,” he said.

Some elements of the program have become clear standouts. The school store and the Friday incentive have been especially successful because they give students tangible milestones to work toward and celebrate.

For Ms. Heusey, Mr. Cercone and Dr. Milke, one of the best parts of PBIS is how creative they are able to be with it.

“You get to bring back a little of the fun from elementary school and bring it to teens,” said Ms. Heusey. “No matter your age, we all have a kid inside us that wants to be acknowledged, and wants to have fun.”
